Cuba High School, located in the small, rural community of Cuba in Graves County, Kentucky, is one of the most legendary names in the state’s athletic history. Its teams were famously known as the Cuba Cubs, and they competed in the distinctive school colors of green and gold. The school’s independent existence came to an end in 1977 during a wave of county-wide consolidation. Cuba High School was merged with Farmington and Sedalia high schools to form part of the centralized Graves County High School system, which remains the secondary school for the area as of 2026. While the high school students were moved, the Cuba building continued to serve the community as Cuba Elementary School for several decades before its final closure following a 2014 legal battle over its structural maintenance and local property taxes. In boys' basketball, the Cuba Cubs are immortalized for their "David vs. Goliath" triumph in the 1952 State Championship. Led by visionary coach Jack Story, who introduced a "Harlem Globetrotters" style of ball-handling to a core group of players starting in the 8th grade, the tiny school of fewer than 100 students captured the hearts of fans across the commonwealth. After a heartbreaking loss in the 1951 state finals, the 1952 team—anchored by stars Charles "Doodle" Floyd and Howie Crittenden—returned to the Sweet Sixteen to defeat the massive Louisville powerhouse, DuPont Manual, in a 58–52 upset. Their story, often compared to the movie Hoosiers, was recently commemorated in February 2025 by Graves County High School during a celebration honoring the program's last living champions.
