Wildcats
Tollesboro High School was a cherished community institution located in the city of Tollesboro within Lewis County, Kentucky. The school's teams were known as the Wildcats, a mascot that still evokes strong community pride and nostalgia. The high school was highly successful in fighting off consolidation attempts for many years, but it eventually closed following consolidation in the early 2000s, around 2007. The school building continued to stand for a time, repurposed as an elementary school, but the loss of the high school was widely felt as a significant blow to the community's identity. The current Lewis County School system now serves the area's secondary students. In boys' basketball, the Tollesboro Wildcats had a rich history and were a formidable force in the 16th Region and their respective district, particularly in the 1950s. They competed well against rivals like Hitchins and Vanceburg. One notable season was 1951-1952, when the Wildcats were runners-up in their district tournament, falling to Hitchins in a close championship game. That same year, players Bob Stamper and Eugene Vincent earned All-State Honorable Mention selections. The program consistently produced talented players and was a central source of community entertainment and pride for decades.
